The Benefit Fund was established and granted its tax exemption, 501 (c) (3) on December 19, 2003. The Benefit Fund is an out-growth of the San Antonio Black Police Officers’ Coalition (SABPOC).
Its purpose is to provide partial scholarships to deserving
high school students which was previously supported by the SABPOC. Also, provide
financial assistance to the citizens of San Antonio and its members who endure
unexpected hardships, and sponsor seminars to educate the public on the operations
of the Police department for the purpose of forming a better relationship.
In addition to its main purpose, the Benefit Fund has sponsored the following events:
Annual Turkey Give-Away: In 2002, Sergeant Barney Whitson started the event for the purpose of providing turkeys to churches, low income individuals and families in the community during the Thanksgiving season. The initial turkey give-away was heavily concentrated on the Eastside of San Antonio. With the help of HEB, allowing the use of its property and its donations, the turkeys give-away has expanded to the Southside of town. Our goal is to expand generosity throughout the entire city of San Antonio. We offer our deepest appreciation and thanks to HEB for its assistance and generosity.
An acknowledgement goes to the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association and the San Antonio Hispanic Police Officers’ Organization for its generous donations.
Annual Easter Egg Hunt: This event was the idea of Sergeant Sylvia Cameron when she was the president of the SABPOC in 1990. The purpose of the event was to give back to the community.
Other charitable contributions have come under the umbrella of the Benefit Fund, in the form of donations to individuals, churches, and organizations.
The Benefit Fund is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization and has been solely supported by it members dues, organizational donations, and proceeds from the annual picnic, Juneteenth dance and mixer, and raffle sales from the Christmas dance.
